Reeya Shrestha, a vibrant 20-year-old from Kathmandu, lost her vision at the age of four. As a child, she was an extrovert who loved beauty pageants and often mimicked contestants with her mother’s shawl as a gown. Her mother fondly remembers those early days, filled with Reeya’s laughter and dreams.
As she grew older, Reeya’s blindness gradually made her more introverted and reserved. Yet, her passion for beauty pageants never faded. When she came across a post about the first season of Mr. and Mrs. Blind Rockers, she felt a spark revive within her. With the unwavering support of her mother, she decided to participate.
Winning the title in that season marked a turning point in her life. It was not just a crown but was a symbol of strength and possibility. “If I can do this, I can do anything,” she thought. The pageant gave her a platform to express herself, and it opened doors to new experiences, including modeling alongside other visually impaired individuals. One of the biggest hurdles for Reeya was traveling independently. She had always relied on someone to accompany her. But her involvement with Blind Rocks! gave her the confidence to break through that barrier. She began commuting alone using public transportation to attend workshops and events, discovering a newfound sense of independence.
Her journey with Blind Rocks! continued to empower her. The organization not only gave her confidence but also a community that truly understood and uplifted her. From being a shy and hesitant young woman, Reeya blossomed into someone who embraces challenges and opportunities with courage.
Reflecting on her growth, Reeya stands as a powerful example of resilience. Her story shows how dreams can be reignited and how support and self-belief can transform lives. Today, she continues to explore new possibilities, living proof that with determination and the right guidance, nothing is beyond reach.
