Rebirth Through Rhythm

Samjhana Shrestha, born in Ramechhap, witnessed her life take a drastic turn when she lost her sight at the age of 19. The transition to a world without vision was incredibly painful, and she struggled to cope with the emotional and physical challenges that came with it. She felt as though she  had lost a part of herself, and the activities she once loved seemed impossible now.

During this difficult time, she met Sristi KC, the founder of Blind Rocks! KC who had experienced a similar situation, bestowed Shrestha with her unwavering optimism and belief in the potential of every individual, regardless of their abilities. When she inquired about her hobbies, she hesitantly mentioned her love for dancing. Since her childhood, she had always enjoyed dancing, but after losing sight, she doubted she could ever dance again.

Shrestha was encouraged to join a dance workshop organized by Blind Rocks!. Although she was apprehensive at first, she decided to give it a try.  Shrestha shared, “Six years ago, I attended my first hip-hop dance class. Initially, it was challenging to follow the instructor’s voice and understand the movements. However, as days went by, I caught the rhythm and the steps became more doable.”

Joining these dance classes marked a turning point in her life. “For the first few days, my mother accompanied me to the classes, but as I gained confidence, I started traveling alone. This newfound independence was empowering. It was one of the first moments in my life where I felt truly empowered and capable of navigating the world on my own.”

She said, “Completing the dance classes opened up numerous opportunities for me. I performed on stage in various programs, and to my delight, I was paid for my performances. This not only gave me visibility but also made me economically independent. I began to see a future where I could support myself and pursue my passions without limitations.”

The transformation didn’t stop there. “Overcoming my initial fear of speaking up and traveling alone, I gained immense confidence in public speaking. I could now express myself more freely and connect with others on a deeper level.”

Dancing reignited a spark within her, and through this journey, she discovered strength, confidence, and independence she never knew she had. “Joining Blind Rocks was a rebirth for me.” She realized the importance of community, friends  and the incredible potential that each one holds and how it can be unleashed with just the power of encouragement.
